Call for Special Issue → Biologically Active Compounds from Aquatic Sources and Functional Foods Fortified with Aquatic Bioactives
In recent years, increasing demand for healthy diets and supplements so called functional foods based on natural sources has placed biologically active compounds at the center of the most studied fields and has led to the discovery of various novel compounds. Negative reputation of drugs and the grey area of the supplements boot the natural bioactive compounds and functional ingredients derived from those compounds. This increasing demand leads to seek sustainable resources to obtain bioactive compounds. Aquatic environments as well as marine and ocean derived bioactive compounds such as marine microorganisms, plants, carotenoids, marine by-product and fishery co-product streams constitute the most of the marine nutra-ingredients to produce functional foods. The holistic approach link medicine and the diet combines biologically active compounds in fortificated foods so called functional foods.
this special issue aims to publish manuscripts focused on:
➢ Bioactives from aquatic sources: Plants, animals, microorganisms, and extremophiles
➢ Development of functional foods and nutraceuticals enriched with aquatic bioactives
➢ Aquatic bioactives: Characterization and biotechnological applications
➢ Industrial applications of aquatic foods and their co-products
